A goal without action is fantasy…. Let’s say your dream is to own a sailboat… Are you doing the things you need to in order to make owning that sailboat a reality? Or are you simply fantasizing about owning a sailboat?
If you’re dream/goal is to truly own a sailboat what are you doing to make that reality? Are you saving money specifically for your future boat, are you taking sailing lessons? Are you studying maritime law? Are you learning how to navigate on water? Or are you just fantasizing about it and doing diddly squat…
If you want to sail but you’re not taking steps towards making that goal a reality then you’re doing yourself a disservice…
The same can be said for so many things in life such as wanting to buy a house (but not saving any money), saying you want to be fit (but sitting at home watching Netflix, eating a bag of chips), wanting to change careers (but not doing any research on what’s required to make the change) wanting to learn how to play the guitar (but the guitar you bought last year has been collecting dust)
We all do it…
When we sit down with our athletes to discuss their goals we start by identifying their values and priorities.
Often their top priorities are things such as their families, friends, having fun, their health, their hobbies and things that typically bring them joy.
When I speak with parents who are sacrificing everything (including their health) so that their kids can lead healthy and happy lives.
I will then ask those parents what do you think your kids want for you?
Often the things that they’re sacrificing are the things that their children would want for them.
Such as health, happiness, joy, and relaxation…
Then ask yourself are you modeling the behaviors that would inspire your kids to live the lifestyle that you want them to have?
doing this exercise allows us to help them align their goals with their values and priorities so that they have an important and emotional reason to move towards their goals.
Once we know your reason why then we can set S.M.A.R.T. goals.
Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely
I want to be fitter (unspecific) vs. I want to go to the gym 3-5 days per week… (specific)
The more specific the goal the higher the chance you will have to achieve it.
I want to go to the gym vs. I want to go to the gym 5 days per week at 4:30 pm
By assigning a measurement we can track if we are taking action to move towards our goal
I’m going to go the gym every morning before work vs. I’m going to go to the gym at 4:30 pm because I’m off work at 4:00 pm and It’s on my way home and it’s convenient.
If for example, you want to workout before work but the gym doesn’t open until 6:00 am and you need to be at work for 6:30 am does your goal make sense taking into consideration all factors. We never want to set a goal that isn’t attainable or even possible.
Do you even want to workout? or would focusing on a nutrition goal help you achieve the result that you’re looking for?
An example is if you wanted to simply lose bodyfat then you could achieve that goal simply by working on making adjustments to your lifestyle and nutrition habits.
We need to make sure that the goal we pick is something that we truly want and not feel that we simply should be doing because that’s what we think we need to be doing….
When are you going to start? How long will this goal take to accomplish? Do I have the resources to accomplish it?
We often see people postponing goals until the stars align… waiting until everything is perfect…
I will let you in on a little secret…
Now is the time to start, today is the day. There’s no logical reason to postpone working towards your goals… We might start saying things like, I’m going to wait until the kids are in school, I’m going to wait until I have a better schedule with work, I’m going to wait until I will the lottery…
Waiting to work towards a goal will leave you feeling frustrated and helpless, we only start building momentum when we actually START. It feels good to tell ourselves we have goals, but it feels even better to actually work towards and accomplish them.
