One of the most common things that we hear, when we talk to people who’re interested in starting training CrossFit is “I’m just going to start working out/running/swimming/biking to get in shape before I try CrossFit…”
One reason I believe that there’s a perception that you need to be “fit” to do CrossFit is the fact that when done consistently CrossFit’s training methodology actually produces “fit” people.
The funny thing is that the vast majority of “fit” CrossFitters started off as normal everyday people like you and I. They come from all walks of life such as entrepreneurs, stay at home parents, tradespeople, health care workers, service industry workers, doctors, lawyers and every other type of profession you can think of. Age also doesn’t matter we’ve trained kids, teens, adults and elderly people. All human beings share the same needs, we all need to be able to push, pull, bend, squat, lunge, twist, run, jump, move, lift and stabilize our core. If we lose our ability to do any of those things we’re in trouble…
As coaches and fitness professionals we don’t expect you to show up on day one ready to play in the SuperBowl or win the CrossFit Games, we also don’t expect you to do anything your not mentally or physically prepared to do.
We always start by guiding new members in a progressive manner where we slowly introduce new equipment, movements and technique in small easy to learn training sessions. They quickly realize that all the movement can be scaled or substituted to create a workout that is perfectly suited for them.
If you can’t squat we have you sit onto a box or bench and stand up until you build the strength to be able to, If you can’t safely press overhead we identify other movements that will allow you to press horizontally such as a push-up. If you can’t do a push-up we will show you how to modify it so that you can work on pressing.
If you have a previous injury we’re happy to work with your physio/health care provider to come up with a plan to help you overcome the issue and work around it when required. If you’re ever unsure of something you have a coach present to help you find a solution on the spot. No matter what roadblock you encounter you’re not alone and we’re here to help.
