Do I have to take the Start-Strong Program?
If you are new to CrossFit then yes. When you first join our facility you are required to take our Start-Strong classes. This is a where a coach will take you and introduce you to the movements that you will be performing in the workouts. The reason this is required is so all movements are completed safely and with good technique. These classes are done in a small group format that facilities learning of the movements. The personal coaching doesn’t end either, you will receive advice and corrections on movements for the entire time you are a member.
CrossFit Looks challenging, is it for me?
CrossFit is for everyone! It will be adjusted for your current fitness level and age by our coaches. They’re here to ensure that you will feel comfortable with each and every movement and weight that you will be using while training.
How frequently should I CrossFit?
This depends on each individual and their previous exposure to exercise and sport. We suggest dedicating at minimum three days per week to physical training if possible. Some people respond well to five consecutive days of training with two days of rest, while others thrive on three days of training with one day of rest. By properly scheduling training and rest you will ensure that your hormones stay balanced and your body composition will improve.
What is Open Gym?
Open gym is offered as an add-on to all member who have successfully completed the Start-Strong program. This is an ideal time for members to come in and work on a skill, technique, strength and mobility. This is also a great time to make up the daily WOD if missed. There will always be a coach there ready to help you with anything you feel needs more attention.
What if there are some exercises or movements I can’t perform?
If there are any movements you’re not capable of or comfortable performing one of our knowledgeable coaches will be able to modify or substitute it for you. We want you to push yourself to learn as much as you can but we want you to feel excited about trying something new, not dread it. At CrossFit Anchored Athletics we feel that learning the proper mechanics of a movement takes time and practice. We are here to support and encourage you to learn all the movements efficiently and with confidence. If you have any injuries or discomfort please let us know immediately. We can’t prevent anything that we are not aware of and it’s in your best interest to let us know.
What can I expect from a typical CrossFit Class
Every CrossFit class will have some similar key elements.
- Warm up / mobility – approximately 10 – 15 minutes. This should feel like a mini workout, which will be designed to get your heart rate up, increase your mobility and prepare you for the rest of the class.
- Skill / Strength – depending on the day we will either work on a skill such as climbing a rope or a strength movement such as back squats.
- Conditioning – this will be complimentary to the warm up and skill/strength. This can range from doing 5000meter on the rower to 21-15-9 of kettlebell swings, box jumps and power cleans.
- Recovery / mobility – we will use different mobility tools to help your body recover faster and be better prepared to leave the gym. This gives you time for your heart rate to lower and a chance to socialize with the other members who just did the workout with you.
Is CrossFit competitive?
CrossFit can be competitive if you choose to be competitive with another member, this can be a wonderful thing as long as it stays respectful.
Anyone can participate and we feel initially the only person you need to be competitive with is yourself. This means trying to beat your own previous personal records, lift a little more weight then last time or even perform just one pushup if this is something you want to achieve. We all start at different stages based on our background and we encourage all our members to strive for excellence from themselves.
Eventually you may want to compete at a higher level. There are many CrossFit competitions and we will always support our members who wish to participate and be active competitively.
How is CrossFit different than regular gyms?
The benefits of CrossFit vs. a traditional gym are as follows;
When you first join our facility you are required to take our Start-Strong classes, this is a where a coach will take you and introduce you to the movements that you will be performing in the workouts. The reason this is required is so all movements will be done safely and with good technique. The classes are done in a small group environment to ensure that everyone gets the guidance they need to learn the movements, with a ratio of no more than five members to one coach.
At a regular gym you will have no guidance from any of the staff unless you pay extra for personal training. Of course there are some exceptions to this but it’s rare.
When you come into CrossFit Anchored Athletics everyone will welcome you into the community and you will get to know the person training beside you. You will quickly make friends with people from all walks of life. The community aspect of CrossFit is to take a person who is having difficulty and help them overcome any obstacle they face. They will give you strength when you didn’t know you had any and they will give you encouragement to succeed.
At a regular gym people usually keep to themselves and it can feel somewhat intimidating when you’re unsure of what you should be doing.
At CrossFit Anchored Athletics we do the research and design workouts that are challenging and constantly varied, this will allow you to take the guess work out of training and know that you’re getting the training you require to get the results you want.
At a regular gym you design your own workouts, unless you do a lot of research on exercise in your spare time you will most likely find yourself getting frustrated with your results. Regular gyms can be a great resource if you know what your doing but more often then not it can end up being a waste of effort.
One of the best parts of CrossFit is the fact that we encourage our members to record their workouts. It shows you on paper the progress your actually making.
