The CrossFit Open is coming!

What is the open?

The open is a worldwide competition that takes place every February/March at all CrossFit affiliates worldwide. CrossFit announces 1 workout each week for 3 weeks. These workouts have 3 levels of difficulty, Rx, Scaled, and foundations so there is a workout to suit everyone much like we have in regular classes. It is a chance to come together with other members of your gym and have some fun with your fitness.

What are the dates of the open?

This year workouts will be announced on the following dates:

Thursday February 27

Thursday March 6

Thursday March 13

How can I participate?

At Anchored Athletics we like to run a fun event that takes place every Friday during the open. This year our intramural event will consist of 3 teams which will be drawn 2 weeks before the open starts by your coaches. Teams will compete against each other for points. Completing an open workout will get you points as will coming in and cheering on your team. Teams often also make up a theme so points can be awarded for team spirit.

How do I complete the workouts?

The Friday classes during the open will all have the announced open workout for the week as the workout of the day. You can complete your workout in your regular class. In addition, we will be running Friday Night Lights again, and your workout can be done during this time. More detail about Friday Night Lights is below.

What is Friday Night Lights?

Friday night lights is about all of us coming together to celebrate our fitness for the 3 Friday evenings during the open. We will be running heats again this year. Heat times will be posted in Zenplanner and you can reserve a time that is convenient for you. Heat times posted in zenplanner will indicate your warm-up time. When you come in a coach will put your heat through a thorough warm-up, explain all of the standards for your workout, and make sure you have a strategy to go and complete the workout. You will then go and complete your workout with everyone in your heat.

What is the difference between an open workout and a normal class workout?

During open workouts you will have a judge (a coach or an Anchored member) who will be counting your reps and making sure you hit the movement standards outlined for the workout. Don't worry, we always go over the movement standards in class, so this should already be familiar to you. Think of it as having a personal rep counter so you can just go fast!

I am new to CrossFit, can I still participate?

You can absolutely participate! There are 3 workout versions, much like in class. We highly encourage you to come out and have some fun with your fitness.

Is there a cost?

There is no cost if you want to participate in the intramural open. However, if you want to officially register for the open with CrossFit there is a charge of $20.

How do I sign up for the intramural open?

If you would like to be put on a team you can put your name on the board beside the main entrance. That will ensure that you are drafted onto a team.

Do I need to register through CrossFit?

You do not need to officially register through CrossFit to participate in our intramural event. However, registration is encouraged as this will allow you to participate in another community event that we will be hosting called the Community Cup, which will take place in June. You need to have completed the 3 open workouts so that you can receive a level through CrossFit for you to participate in the Community Cup.

I can't complete the workouts on Friday but still want to participate. Can I do that?

Workouts need to be completed by the Monday following the workout announcement. If you cannot complete your workout on a Friday you can arrange with anyone on your team or with a coach to have someone come in and judge your workout at another time that is more convenient. It will be up to you to arrange this, but rest assured, during open season we are all here to help.

How do I sign up through CrossFit?

First, make sure you have also signed up on our board so we know you are participating with us. Then, go to the below link and you can officially register through CrossFit as well. There is no charge to participate with us at Anchored but there is a charge if you officially register through CrossFit to complete the open.

Above there was mention of a judge - who can help judge?

Anyone can help judge, and we encourage you to do so. It will help you learn what the movement standards are and make you a better athlete.

Do note, however, that if you officially register with CrossFit for the open, you will need to have a judge who has taken the judge's course for your workout. As you can imagine, we will need a bunch of you to take the judge's course so that we have enough official judges. You will receive a point for your team if you do complete the judge's course. The link to the judge's course is below.

I hope this answers a lot of your questions. Please reach out to a coach in class if you have any further questions.

Let's have some fun!!
